Matt Steffen

I'm a data scientist and developer with a background in applied mathematics, where I've found graphs, models, and algorithms to be powerful ways of making sense of complex systems. Professionally, I've built full-stack web applications and machine learning models, working with tools like Python, Go, Rust, and TypeScript frameworks such as Next.js and Nuxt.js. I enjoy solving interesting problems by building and refining tools—whether that's developing LLM-powered applications with frameworks like LangChain, or re-implementing numerical solvers to better understand the mechanics behind them. My current focus is on semantic search, exploring how embeddings, databases, and large language models can be combined to uncover better answers to the right questions.

Outside of work, I value consistency, discipline, and growth—principles I've learned through weight training, backpacking, and service in my church community. I'm a husband, father, and mentor, and I see those roles as deeply connected to how I approach both life and work: showing up, embracing challenges, and striving to build things that matter.
